  • Am I the bad guy for wanting to keep my finances private?

For reference I am 20 years old, still living at home, and have a full time job.
  • So today my mom and I are going over some stuff. Like future plans, me taking over some bills, etc. Like financial stuff. When doing this, she wants to log into my bank account and know exactly how
  • much is in it. But in my opinion, I think that is my business only and all that matters is that if I'm able to pay what I need to, not for her to know exactly what I have.
  • She doesn't have full access to my bank account but what she does is she sits me down and forces me to log in, and if she's unhappy with the amount, makes me scroll through my transactions and gives me a huge lecture.
  • I have a problem putting my foot down with her sometimes but goddamn it I need to have something that's my own. Who cares how much I EXACTLY have, if I'm able to make a budget and pay what I need to that's all that matters in my opinion.

  • So AITA for wanting to keep my finance information to myself? EDIT: I am living at home for free but in the past I have offered to help out many times, which she has always refused. I
  • also haven't done something so financially irresponsible in the past to warrant the constant checking. And yes, I do plan on moving out.

  • makethatnoise Info: are you worried about your mother taking your money, or taking advantage of you by asking you to pay for more depending on how much money you have? At 20, still learning finances, it's normal for parents to want to help teach their children budgeting, especially if you live at home. If that's what she's doing, NAH. If you are concerned about her stealing from you, I can understand not wanting to give her any access to your finances.
  • OP HippieB 25 I have absolutely no concern about her stealing from me, she has never tried to touch it in that way. I have also offered to help out in the past since I am able to, but she has always refused.
  • TrifleGlittering7870 How does she force you? You aren't an AH for being threatened or strong-armed by an adult in their house. That's bullying. If you just can't or won't say NO! then your issue isn't Mom. Either way - wanting to keep private information private = NTA
  • OP HippieB 25 Like I said, I have a hard time putting my foot down with her. She raised me as a single mother and has done so much for me, so it's hard to not do something when she asks me to.
  • BlondDee1970 INFO: Are you living at home for free? Because if your parents are paying your rent, utilities, food etc they somewhat have a right to know that you are saving a great deal of your money since they are still paying for you to live with them in a free living situation. If you dislike their questions you're also free to move out. You work full time so they're giving you the opportunity to save that money you'd spend on housing.
  • OP HippieB 25 I do live at home for free but I have offered many times in the past to help pay and she always refused.
  • Lotsof Cats Fl INFO: is your mom trying to give you financial advice? Or is it like she needs money? Either way NTA to say no, but if she just trying to impart some financial guidance maybe you can get some personal finance books to read together or something
  • OP HippieB 25 My mom is very adamant about never taking or borrowing money from her children. She does give me financial advice, but I have quite a bit saved up and have zero debt. So I see no reason for her to see everything I do.
  • WoodyForestt NTA but your mom would also not be the asshole for saying "You are no longer living here rent free and I'm no longer paying your phone bill if i can't confirm that you're not blowing $500 a month at Lululemon." You want freedom to spend your money on anything at all without your mom's judgment and meddling? Move out.
  • dorepond Although they are your parents, NEVER let them have FULL access to your financial accounts. Folks do strange things when under financial pressure (which they may or may not be under at THIS time). Congratulations to you. I hope you have opened up a Roth IRA account while so young to take advantage of the POWER OF COMPOUNDING. Good luck to you. NTA.
  • Shakeit126 NTA. Tell her your future plans are to move out, and your finances are not her concern. Hopefully you can find someone roommates and get out of there.
  • Sea-Twist6391 You are an adult and need to stand up for yourself. Your mother doesn't need to know your financials.
  • g4frfl You already know she doesn't need that information. That's why you didn't want to give it to her. Not standing up for yourself and your privacy makes you the ta to yourself. Do you want to live the rest of your life giving people information they don't need and shouldn't have so they can use it against you?
  • AcanthisittaPlus 5047 NTA! Practice saying NO! Say it in front of a mirror. If you have a close friend, practice with them. Mom asks/tells you to log into your account. NO Mom demands you log into your account. NO and leave Repeat as often as necessary.
